Interior ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, met in Spain's southern town of Jerez on Sunday for discussions on the battle against terrorism.
Terrorism is a threat not only to Europe, but also to the wholeworld, Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy.
"No democracy in the world can feel it is safe from...terrorism... We must therefore step up our security measures, protection andcollaboration," Acebes said.
"The five of us are meeting to discuss common problems, mainly in the fight against terrorism and illegal immigration," he added.
Speaking on the same occasion, Sarkozy said that some European countries had been targeted in the past, therefore "we should not give the impression that we are taking this threat lightly."
The meeting was held following a series of deadly bombing attacks in Russia's Chechnya, Saudi Arabia and Morocco over the past week.
No particular decisions or declarations are expected from the meeting.
