Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday urged the promotion of economic cooperation between members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

"Economic cooperation is the basis for and a priority of the SCO," Hu said at an annual summit of the SCO.

"We should always push it forward with firm political will, practical policies and perseverance."

Taking into account the reality of the region, China suggests economic cooperation begin with transportation. A multilateral highway transportation pact should be signed and implemented as soon as possible, Hu said.

Hu expressed the hope that a breakthrough would be made in regional economic cooperation at the second meeting of the SCO prime ministers in the latter half of this year.
