Cuba on Friday ratified its aspiration to bid for hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in its capital Havana.

The General Assembly of the Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) Friday ratified the decision of the Executive Committee of the organization to present the required documents to enter into the bidding contest.

"Cuba has enough merits to deserve being selected as a venue. It has extended the sports participation on its whole population and has developed an extensive sports culture," said COC PresidentJose Fernandez.

Havana had looked forward to becoming the seat of the 2008 Olympic Games, but was eliminated in the first phase.

In a letter addressed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Cuban Foreign Minister, Felipe Perez ratified the "unrestricted support" of the Cuban government to the petition of COC.

After evaluating a questionnaire with numerous sections, IOC will select the candidates next year in June, prior to select the winner in July, 2005, during its 117th session, to take effect in Singapore.
