Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho said on Sunday he is happy for the athletes of the Hong Kong Special Olympics team now that they are able to participate in the World Summer Games in Ireland.
"A mutually acceptable solution is found at the end of sincere discussions between Hong Kong and Irish officials held in Dublin on Friday and Saturday," Ho said.
The agreement said Hong Kong officials presented a proposal which was considered in detail. The Irish government indicated to Hong Kong that the proposal as set out "is acceptable in terms of its conformity with the criteria as set out by the Expert Committee."
With worries about the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)virus spreading, the Irish government had claimed that athletes from the Chinese mainland, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei and Singapore should not attend the sports meeting.
On the latest development, Ho expressed great admiration for the Hong Kong Special Olympics athletes who had to endure weeks ofanxiety.
"My gratitude goes to our colleagues in the government's officein Brussels, Department of Health and other government departments, the local and international community and the Irish community in Hong Kong for their support for our athletes," he said.
Ho will attend the farewell for the athletes organized by the Hong Kong Irish community on Sunday.
