Beijing Auto Sector Performs Well Despite SARS Impact

The auto sector in China's capitalcity reported strong production and sales figures in May despite the city's battle against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic.

The auto sector in China's capitalcity reported strong production and sales figures in May despite the city's battle against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic.

According to the Beijing Automotive Holding Company (BAHC), it produced 24,473 motor vehicles and sold 23,770, up 68.7 percent and 55.5 percent year-on-year, respectively.

The total included output of 5,115 Sonatas and 4,482 Sonatas sold by the Beijing Hyundai Co., Ltd., a joint-venture car maker with investment from the Republic of Korea. This was the best monthly outcome attained by the venture since it was founded, a company official said.

Last month, Beiqi Futian Automobile Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the BAHC, turned out 15,242 vehicles and sold 15,261. It also produced a total of 310 new-type ambulances from January to April,which were shipped to over 20 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in support of local efforts to battle the SARS disease.

The Beijing Automotive Holding Company would maintain the rapidgrowth momentum in June, said An Qingheng, chairman of the corporation.
