US to Conduct Sea-base Missile Test on Wednesday

The Pentagon said Monday it would conduct a sea-based missile test on Wednesday, in which a US Navy Aegis cruiser would try to intercept a ballistic missile during its ascent phase.
The US Missile Defense Agency said the Flight Mission-5 test would be conducted sometime between 4 pm EDT (2000 GMT) and 8 pm EDT (2400 GMT). The USS Lake Eerie would track and try to shoot the missile down within minutes of its launch from the Pacific Missile Range facility on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.
This would be the fourth sea-based missile intercept test and also the second time the interception would be conducted as the target missile was rising into space. The first interception test involved hitting the target missile during its ascent phase was inNovember.
The Pentagon hopes to have a sea-based defense that can be deployed in an emergency against short- and medium-range missiles as early as 2005-2006, US military officials said.
The sea-based system is only one of a variety of missile defenses being explored by the Pentagon as part of the Bush administration's effort to build a layered defense system.
