US Forces Launch Fresh Operation to Prevent Attacks in Afghanistan

US-led coalition forces have launched a new military operation in eastern Afghan provinces in an effort to prevent more attacks by Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters crossing the border with Pakistan, the coalition sources said Saturday.
The operation, coded Unified Resolve, began this week in eastern provinces along the Pakistan border with troops being deployed to seal off the porous border, said US military spokesman Rodney Davis in a statement.
According to the spokesman, US troops carried out air assaults and ground movement in the eastern border province of Nangarhar province earlier in the day to prevent threat elements from crossing the Afghan-Pakistan border.
The Operation was launched just days after senior military officials and diplomats from the United States, Afghanistan and Pakistan met in Islamabad last week to discuss new mechanisms to improve security in the region.
US military and Afghan authorities complained that remnants of the Taliban and its allies including the al-Qaeda network, believed to be hiding in Pakistan's border areas, have been stepping up their attacks against the coalition, the Afghan government and foreign targets in recent months.
Some 115,000 US-led coalition forces are in Afghanistan to rootout holdout Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters after a US-led military strike helped topple the Taliban regime in the country in 2001.
Activities of suspected Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan have been on the rise in recent months as the weather becomes warmer, while Taliban leaders have reportedly vowed to launch more attacks against the US-backed government and foreign troops in the country.
