Acting Beijing Mayor Stresses Sustainable Development
The battle against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) helped the Chinese pay more attention to social sustainable development, said Acting Mayor of Beijing Wang Qishan Thursday.

Wang spoke during a meeting with Ikuo Hirayama, president of the Japan-China Friendship Association.
Chinese people have learnt about the balanced development of economy and society, he said, putting emphasis on construction of social public health systems.
Beijing people are now more concerned about urban garbage and waste water disposal, he said.
Ikuo Hirayama extended congratulations on Beijing's resumption of normal life. Countries should enhance exchanges to jointly dealwith health and environment issues, he said.
