Macao's Exports Pick up in First Half Year

Exports from the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) picked up 10 percent in the first halfyear, despite a economic slump inflicted by the outbreak of severeacute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in its surrounding regions.

According to the latest figures from the Statistics and Census Services, Macao exported 9.39 billion patacas (1 million US dollars) worth of goods in the first half year, representing a year-on-year increase of 10.8 percent. Of the export commodities, local products jumped 11.8 percent, while re-exports rose 7.4 percent.

The export of textile and apparel products, which contributed to 82.6 percent of the total export, increased by 11.2 percent. The United States and the European Union are still the primary destination for Macao's export. The export to the United States increased by 15.2 percent during the period, while that to the European Union went up by 7.6 percent.

The figures showed that Macao's imports rose a year-on-year 4.7percent in the first half year to 10.19 billion patacas (1.25 billion US dollars), leading to a trade deficit of roughly 800 million patacas (100 million US dollars) for the SAR.
