China Confident of Positive Results of Six-country Talks: Chinese FM

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxingon Monday expressed confidence of positive results to be achieved at the upcoming six-country talks on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxingon Monday expressed confidence of positive results to be achieved at the upcoming six-country talks on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"China, its neighboring countries and the international community are looking forward to a peaceful solution to the issue of the Korean Peninsula," Li said at a press conference after separate meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi.

"We hope to see a peninsula without nuclear weapons," Li said.

China, the DPRK and the United States held talks in Beijing on April 23-25. The upcoming six-country talks will involve the DPRK,the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia.

As a special envoy of the Chinese government, China's Vice-Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo visited Russia, the DPRK and the United States in July and held consultations with parties concerned on the nuclear issue, Li said.

"China pays high attention to regional and world peace because we can only develop economy and improve people's living standard under the condition of peace," Li said.

He welcomed Japan's efforts to play "a constructive role" in dealing with the DPRK's nuclear issue.

The envisioned six-country talks are aimed at seeking a peaceful solution to the DPRK's nuclear issue, and all the parties shared the view that the peace process on the Korean Peninsula will be continued, so as to achieve a lasting peace and stability on the peninsula, Li added.
