Intel to Invest US$375m to Build Factory in SW China City

Intel, the world largest chip maker, announced here on Wednesday plans to build a factory in China's Sichuan Province for packaging and testing of its semiconductor products.

Intel, the world largest chip maker, announced here on Wednesday plans to build a factory in China's Sichuan Province for packaging and testing of its semiconductor products.

Craig R. Barrett, Intel CEO, said his company will invest 375 million US dollars beginning 2004 to build the factory.

Intel signed a cooperation memorandum on the proposed deal Wednesday with the Chengdu Municipal Government.

The first-phase of the factory costing 200 million US dollars is expected to be operational in the second half of 2005, employing 675 staff members, and its second phase construction will cost 175 billion US dollars to expand its capacity and employ more people.

Barrett said he hoped it was a win-win deal, and the world-class factory will become part of Intel's global network of semiconductor production.

The CEO said Chengdu was chosen for the building of the factory because of its unique strategic position, excellent educational system and large number of skilled technicians.

Intel has other such packaging and testing factories in Pudong new district of Shanghai, Malaysia, the Philippines, Porto Rico, and has set up research and research and development centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
