Myanmar PM Outlines New Political Policy

Newly-appointed Myanmar Prime Minister General Khin Nyunt outlined a new political policy here on Saturday, saying that his country will resume the long-suspended national convention, but giving no time frame.

Khin Nyunt made the remarks in his first public speech since he was appointed as prime minister in a major cabinet reshuffle five days ago. His speech was heard by high-ranking government officials, regional military commanders and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

In his seven-point roadmap for democracy, Khin Nyunt said his country will draft a new state constitution based on the detailed principles laid down by the convention.

The draft constitution will undergo referendum and a new general election will be held on a "free and fair" basis, he said, adding that the parliament will be convened by representatives elected in the election and a new government will be formed through the parliament.

However, Khin Nyunt did not mention whether opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK), who has been under detention by the government in the name of protection since May 30, would be allowed to take part in any future government. The May 30 incident refers to the case that a convoy of ASSK was reportedly ambushed by the government supporters on a political trip to the north of the country.

The country's national convention, which began in January 1993 after the general election in 1990, has adjourned for more than seven years since March 1996. The 1990 government-sponsored general election was overwhelmingly won by ASSK's National League for Democracy (NLD) which walked out of the national convention in November 1995.
