Earthquake Jolts Akto in Northwest China

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Akto County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Tuesday, according to the seismological authorities.

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Akto County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Tuesday, according to the seismological authorities.

The tremor occurred at 7:16 a.m. (Beijing time) on Tuesday in the area around 38.5 degrees north latitude and 75.1 degrees east longitude, 25 kilometers away from the border with Tajikistan. The epicenter was about 130 kilometers to the southwest of Kashi.

Details about the damage and casualties were not available by press time.
