Chinese Top Legislator Meets with Japanese PM

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met here Friday with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

They had an in-depth exchange of views on a variety of issues, including Sino-Japanese relations, and reached important consensus.

Koizumi said Wu's visit on the occasion of the 25th anniversaryof the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship is of importance for promoting the growth of bilateral relations.

Wu, who conveyed to Koizumi regards from Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, said Sino-Japanese relations have experienced comprehensive development since the normalization of diplomatic ties 30 years ago, which saw a sharp increase in economic, trade and personnel exchanges, among others.

The Sino-Japanese relations are not only important for the bilateral cooperation, but also for the peace and development of Asia and the whole world, Wu said.

"President Hu Jintao's meeting with Koizumi in Russia in May and my own current visit to Japan showed that the new Chinese leaders attach great importance to the friendly and good-neighborly relations with Japan," Wu said, adding Sino-Japanese ties will enter a new period of development.

With regard to deepening and expanding bilateral relations, Wu stressed that it is vital to keep high-level exchange of visits, strengthen economic and trade cooperation and personnel exchange, and carefully handle issues of concern to the other side and properly deal with historical matters.

Koizumi said he encourages and supports the growth of bilateraltrade. He maintains that China's development is not a threat to, but an opportunity for, Japan.

Stressing that the Sino-Japanese relations are among the most important bilateral relations for Japan with other countries, Koizumi expressed his strong belief that the relationship will be further strengthened and developed with concerted efforts of both sides.

Wu said the NPC attaches importance to maintaining friendly contacts with the Japanese parliament and welcomes more visits of Japanese lawmakers, especially young lawmakers.

Meanwhile, China also encourages more visits to Japan by Chinese youths, Wu said, noting exchange between people of youngergenerations are of strategic importance for ever-lasting Sino-Japanese friendly relations.

Wu also asked Koizumi to pay personal attention to the case of injuries by chemical weapons left over by Japanese invading troopsin northeast China during the World War II.

Koizumi expressed deep sympathy with and condolence to the victims and promised to seriously handle the issue through diplomatic channels.
