China's Growth not a Threat, but an Opportunity for Japan: Koizumi
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reiterated Friday evening that China's development will not constitute a threat to, but rather provide a development opportunity for, Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reiterated Friday evening that China's development will not constitute a threat to, but rather provide a development opportunity for, Japan.
Koizumi made the remarks at a grand reception to welcome visiting Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo and to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
Noting that some Japanese people say "China's development constitutes a threat to Japan," the prime minister said, "Since last year, I have said on several occasions that China's growth isnot a threat to, but an opportunity for, Japan."
Koizumi said he believes that the respective growth of Japan and China is not only in their own interests, but also is to the benefit of each other. Mutual benefit, coexistence and common prosperity will be the reality in the future, he stressed.
He cited the increasing trade between the two countries as a proof.
The Japanese prime minister also called for enhancing exchange in such fields as culture, arts and sports, in addition to the political and economic areas.
The reception, attended by some 1,500 people, was jointly held by the Chinese Embassy in Japan, the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the Japan-China Friendship Association, and six other organizations for promoting Japan-China friendship.
