Poll shows US president's approval rating drops

The overall rating for US President George W. Bush has dropped to 51 percent, with that for his handling of Iraq to 46 percent, according to a poll released Saturday by the Newsweek magazine.

The overall rating for US President George W. Bush has dropped to 51 percent, with that for his handling of Iraq to 46 percent, according to a poll released Saturday by the Newsweek magazine.

Bush's approval rating on Iraq declined by five percentage points from a survey of Sept. 11-12, while those disapproved of his handling of the situation in Iraq rose by five percentage points to 47 percent.

The poll showed that 56 percent of those people surveyed thought that the Bush administration is spending too much money inpost-war Iraq, against 31 percent who deemed the amounts spent as just right.

On the economy, the president got an approval rating of 38 percent, down from 41 percent in the previous poll, while the disapproval rating rose by six percentage points to 57 percent.

Bush received strong support -- 66 percent of those canvassed --for his handling of anti-terrorism measures.

The poll covered 1,001 adults on Sept. 18-19, with a three-percentage-point margin of error.
