China is making policies to promote the healthy growth of the automobile industry, said Chinese Vice-Premier Huang Ju here Friday.

Huang told a group of Japanese auto-producers that China's automobile industry has entered a rapid growth period.

"China's auto market and industry began high speed growth in the new century," he said. "We are making policies to promote a healthy development of the automobile industry and its consumption."

Huang did not elaborate on the policy.

Fueled by a strong demand, China's production of automobiles leaped from 709,000 in 1991 to 2.34 million in 2001, meaning an annual increase of 15 percent. Experts estimate this year's production of automobiles in China will top four million.

However, most of China's auto manufacturers are small, and of the 123 in the country, 70 produced less than 1,000 vehicles a year.
