The US government has arrested more than 1,000 child sex offenders in an international investigation dubbed Operation Predator, an official said Friday.
The operation, launched by Homeland Security Secretary Thomas J. Ridge on July 9, targeted US citizens and foreigners living in theUnited States who were involved in child sex crimes. Foreign offenders would be prosecuted and deported.
Michael Garcia, director of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said arrests have been made in almost every state and major city in the country.
"The goal of Predator is to get these people off the streets and we're doing that," he added.
The latest arrests were made in Florida this week, with 56 foreigners from 18 countries detained over three days, authorities in Miami announced Friday.
The ICE, which was merged into the Department of Homeland Security early this year, is leading the operation. Garcia said many of the arrests resulted from citizen tips and made by agents in his agency, who have used the Internet more effectively.
