Sudanese National Congress Party (SNCP) General Secretary Ibrahim Ahmed Omer said Saturday that his visit to China was crowned with success and it opened the gate to further bilateral cooperation.

Omer, who is heading an SNCP delegation in China for an eight-day visit, told Chinese media that the SNCP signed a cooperative agreement with the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the visit, which was the first such agreement ever reached between the two parties.

"I believe the agreement has laid down a solid foundation for further cooperation between Sudan and China in the future," he said.

Omer noted that Sudan and China have very good cooperation in the energy field and China's National Petroleum Corporation is Sudan's largest partner in this area.

"Researches showed that the Sudan's oil industry has great prospect for development, so Sudan and China will have broad opportunities for cooperation in this regard," he added.

During his visit in China, Omer met with Jia Qinglin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and other senior CPC officials.

He said Chinese leaders agreed to further expand bilateral cooperation in the fields of industry, transportation and electric power.

On the security accord reached between the Sudanese government and the anti-government Sudanese People's Liberation Movement a few days ago, Omer said the SNCP, as Sudan's ruling party, will continue to promote peace and stability in the country to step up its development and attract more involvement and help from more friendly nations.

Omer also expressed his party's consistent adherence to the One-China policy and thanked China for its support within the United Nations and other international arenas.

Omer arrived in Beijing Tuesday at the invitation of the CPC. Besides Beijing, he will also travel to Shanghai. The SNCP and the CPC established the friendly relations in August 2002.
