US-based Fairchild Semiconductor, a global electronics giant, yesterday started operating its first plant in China.

Fairchild is one of the world's largest suppliers of cutting-edge power and interface solutions to the electronics industry. Products range from computing, communications, consumer electronics, industrial and automotive applications.

Total investment for the Fairchild Semiconductor (Suzhou) Co Ltd will surpass US$300 million. The factory will be Fairchild's first assembly and test facility in China. It is designed for the assembling and testing equipment, as well as for automated warehouse operations.

The plant will focus on developing power, analogue, and logic products for the Chinese market, and will manufacture items for other countries and regions in Asia, Europe and the United States.

"China has been a growing force in the global semiconductor market in the past few years, both in consumption of integrated circuits and in the design and manufacture of electronic products,'' noted Kirk Pond, Fairchild's president, CEO and chairman of the board.

"This state-of-the-art facility will play a crucial role in enabling us to supply our customers with the right products at the right time for their next generation applications,'' Pond said.

Sales of integrated circuits are expected to reach US$28.70 billion by 2005 in the China market and the nation's demand for semiconductors will account for more than half of the world's total from 2002 to 2006, reliable sources say.

Pond said the Suzhou facility will be an integral part of Fairchild's global strategy to more than double sales in China by 2004.

Fairchild realized sales revenues of US$270 million in China in 2002 and it aims to rake in revenues of US$340 million this year.

He said Fairchild will join closer hands with key design houses to develop systems reference designs. In addition, the company will realign product lines to concentrate on China and increase market penetration in key high-growth market sectors, such as consumer electronics, mobile phones and notebook applications.

Fairchild has also forged co-operative ties with Chinese electronics leaders, including Amoisonic, Bird, Changhong, Konka, Lenovo, Haier, Hisense, Huawei, Shinco, Skyworth, TCL and ZTE.

Suzhou Mayor Yang Weize pins high hopes on the operation of the factory for enriching the city's ever-growing semiconductor industrial chain

The city's electronics industry realized sales revenues of about US$10 billion in 2002, and revenues are expected to top US$50 billion in 2005.
