Negotiations on India's acquisition of Russian aircraft carrier "Admiral Gorshkov" are on the verge of completion, the Press Trust of India quoted Defense Minister George Fernandes as saying Tuesday.

A final decision might be taken during the visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Russia next month, according to PTI.

"The price negotiations took a lot of time, but all negotiations and the paperwork being done here are on the verge of completion ... some technicalities had arisen and it will now be possible to resolve them," Fernandes said.

Vajpayee is scheduled to visit Russia on November 11, while Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov will visit India next month before the Prime Minister leaves for Moscow. The Russian side said recently they hoped to finalize the "Gorshkov" deal within this year.

Fernandes was quoted as saying that Indian Coast Guards would place orders for 16 modern ships before the end of the current fiscal, which ends on March 31, 2004.

Asked about the "Scorpion" submarine deal with France, he said,"it is yet to be finalized."
