The United States said Tuesday that it is making progress in winning support for its new draft UN Security Council resolution on Iraq, saying that it is seeking a Security Council vote on the document "within days."
"We think we're making good progress towards adoption of this resolution," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters.
"It's a text that we think people should be able to vote upon,"Boucher said. "But it is possible to incorporate changes that go and strengthen the resolution, if we decide to do so," he added.
Without offering a specific date, Boucher said the United States wants a UN vote on the draft resolution "within days" or ahead of the Iraq donors conference slated for Oct. 23-24 in Madrid, Spain.
He said that the adoption of the new resolution "may encourage some to contribute troops" to Iraq and "have a positive effect" onthe donors conference designed to solicit international donations for rebuilding Iraq.
The draft resolution circulated by the United States in New York on Monday is its third revision. It asks the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council to come up with a timetable before Dec. 15on when a new constitution will be written and fresh elections held.
