To build up diplomatic pressureon Damascus, the US House of Representatives on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill imposing sanctions on Syria.
The Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Act, passed with 398 for and 4 against, bans any transfer of "duel-use" technology to Syria and recommends a series of other options for President George W. Bush to choose.
The options include measures to restrict US exports and business investment in Syria, to freeze Syria's assets in the United States, and to impose travel restrictions on Syrian diplomats posted in New York and Washington, D.C.
The legislation accused Damascus of supporting terrorist groupssuch as Hamas and Islamic Jihad and seeking weapons of mass destruction.
The bill was first approved by the House International Relations Committee last week after the White House and the State Department announced that they no longer opposed such a legislation.
The Bush administration repeatedly complained that Damascus hasfailed to address US concerns.
