China, India split shooting golds at AAG

China and hosts India split the two shooting gold medals on offer at the 1st Afro-Asian Games Sunday in Hyderabad.

China and hosts India split the two shooting gold medals on offer at the 1st Afro-Asian Games Sunday in Hyderabad.

Tan Zongliang of China took the men's 50m free pistol title with a total score of 667.6 points. Samaresh Jung of India finished a distant second at 641.9 points, followed by Francois Van Tonder of South Africa in third at 640.4.

"It is certainly not my best performance today as it is the seventh tournament I took part in since September," said Tan, who has already qualified for next year's Athens Olympic Games.

"I felt a bit tired but anyway, the results are satisfactory," he added.

Tan was never challenged in the competitions. In the morning's qualification round, he totaled 571 points to take a large lead of23 points. He then enlarged the gap to 25.7 points in the final.

Valdimir Guchsha of Kazakhstan, the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games champion in the event, finished a disappointing fourth at 637.5 points.

In the other shooting event earlier on Sunday, Indian sharpshooter Gagan Narang amassed 695.7 points to win the gold of men's 10m air rifle.

Gagan Narang beat Ragaey Abd Alla of Egypt in the final with a margin of one point. Another Egyptian Mohamed Ismail took the bronze medal at 694 points.

Cai Yalin of China, the gold medalist of this event at the 2000Sydney Olympic Games, was fifth with 692.3 points.

"Cai Yalin resumed training only in September after broken his left arm in an accident in June," said Cai's coach, "so he needs more time to display his beat form."
