With finals for boxing, men's soccer and men's hockey still in progress, China has already secured the top place on the medal table of the 1st Afro-Asian Games (AAG) on Friday.

China collected a total of 25 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals in the eight-day, eight-sport games which conclude on Saturday.

Host India, which fielded athletes in almost all the events, has to settle for the second place with 18 gold, 31 silver and 29 bronze medals even if it could get more golds from soccer, hockey and boxing.

China got three more golds on Friday. Chen Ying won the women's 10m air pistol title with a total of 486.9 points. But Ji Haiping and Liu Guohui, who finished one-two after the qualifying round of men's 25m rapid fire pistol, got only a silver and a bronze after a disastrous final. Lee Sang Hak from South Korea took the title at 677.3.

Friday's weightlifting competitions were also dominated by Asian athletes with Mohammad Salehi Sharfd of Iran winning the men's over 105kg class title in a total weight of 372.5 (165.0, 207.5).

The women's 75kg class gold went to Yang Houqin of China who snatched 107.5kg and jerked 135.0kg for a total of 242.5kg.

The highlight of the tournament came in the last event, the women's over 75kg class when Sun Dan of China beat the previous world mark of 168kg with a jerk of 168.5kg.

Sun had tried to assault at the snatch world record after lifting 110kg but she failed twice in 125kg.

"It was a pity I didn't break the snatch world record. Before I came here, I set an aim of breaking all the three world records," said Sun after the competition.

The 20-year-old Sun, who finished second in this year's National Championships, said she was too relaxed to display her best form.

"My personal best is 172.5kg for clean and jerk while the national record of the event stands at 175kg," Sun said.

All the competitions for the 1st AAG conclude on Friday and theclosing ceremony will be held on Saturday.

The newly set AAG Council has decided that the games would be held every four years with the second edition to be hosted by an African country in 2007. But the AAG Council has not yet decided the host country. (Xinhua)
