A senior health official from the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government said Monday that the government is bending over the draft of a new law on epidemic prevention and control to reinforce local residents' obligations in association with the sector.
A senior health official from the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government said Monday that the government is bending over the draft of a new law on epidemic prevention and control to reinforce local residents' obligations in association with the sector.
Koi Kuok Ieng, head of Macao Health Services, said that the new law expected to go into force at the start of the next year will expand the government's power in prevention and control when infectious diseases pose risks to the city.
"The present laws and regulations are outmoded, which for example hinders the government's endeavors in resorting to mandatory public sanitation measures," he said stressing an urgency to promulgate the new law.
The new law will demand an obligation from citizens to maintain hygiene in and around their residence as to prevent epidemics from spreading in communities. The government will be eligible to persuade, help correct or fine those who dare to challenge the law.
