Asia-Pacific nations agree on efforts for WMD nonproliferation
Arms control officials from the Asia-Pacific region agreed Thursday to promote joint efforts to prevent the proliferation to terrorists of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the region.
Arms control officials from the Asia-Pacific region agreed Thursday to promote joint efforts to prevent the proliferation to terrorists of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the region.
They reaffirmed their commitment to preventing terrorists or those who harbor them from acquiring or developing weapons of mass destruction and their delivery means as well as their related materials and technology.
According to a chairman's statement adopted during the one-day meeting of the Asian Senior-Level Talks on Nonproliferation held here, the participants also agreed that continued efforts to reduce this threat should be greatly encouraged.
They specifically noted the importance of strengthening export control systems in Asian countries, promoting dialogue and cooperation on nonproliferation of WMD in the Asian region.
The participants shared that view that preventing the proliferation of WMD is crucial for peace and stability of the world.
Disarmament officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, South Korea, Australia and the United States participatedin the conference, the first of its kind held in Asia.
According to Kyodo News, the officials agreed to continue the dialogue on disarmament, although they did not set a specific datefor the next round of the conference.
