Nearly 1,000 Chinese residing in Nigeria staged a rally Tuesday in Lagos, denouncing the so-called "Taiwan independence" and the attempts to "bringing a new 'constitution' to Taiwan" advocated by Taiwan's separatists led by Chen Shui-bian.

Chen Shui-bian recently said that Taiwan was preparing to stage a "referendum" and bring a new "constitution" to the island on Dec. 10, 2006 and put it into force on May 20, 2008 in an apparent attempt to seek independence.

Banners were hung at the rally site, some with slogans reading: "Whoever Seeks 'Taiwan Independence' is Playing With Fire And Will Get Burnt" and "'Taiwan Independence' Goes Against the Will of the Chinese People."

A statement issued at the rally denounced the Taiwan authorities headed by Chen Shui-bian for attempting to take advantage of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to seek independence.

"Their evil intentions to separate China goes against the historical tide and the will of the entire Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits who seek peace, stability and common development," the statement noted.

"If a handful of separatists in Taiwan dare to announce the establishment of the so-called Republic of Taiwan," the statement said, "the Chinese government will have no other choice but to use force to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country."

The rally was co-organized by the Nigeria Council of Peaceful Reunification of China, the Chinese Industrial and Commercial Enterprises Association in Nigeria and the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Business Council in Nigeria.

In the statement, the three organizations called on all the Chinese people living in Nigeria to unite and strive for peaceful reunification of China.

Speakers at the rally expressed the determination of more than 30,000 Chinese residing in the country to oppose "Taiwan independence."
