Investigation is underway to ascertain the feasibility of diverting water from the Yangtze River to the Weihe River, a branch of the Yellow River which is suffering from water shortage.
The water diversion scheme plans to divert water at the Three Gorges section of the Yangtze River to the Weihe River through Daba Mountain, Qinling Mountain and Fenghe River.
"All kinds of schemes to supplement water for the Yellow River are worth consideration," said Li Guoying, director in charge of the water conservancy commission of the Yellow River. The river would face more severe water shortages as the economy developed rapidly in the region, said Li.
In the next step, the commission will calculate the demands on the river and research potential effects of the diversion scheme. The overall evaluation will be completed by the end of 2005.
