Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, met on Thursday morning in Hanoi the delegation headed by Wang Chen, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and president of the People's Daily.

Nong Duc Manh extended his warm welcome to the People's Daily delegation. He said that Vietnam and China both cherish a long-standing friendship and Vietnam admires and values China's achievements and experiences made in the opening-up and economic construction. In recent years, the relations between the two countries have been strengthened and developed under the guidance of the 16-character directive policy "long-term stability, looking into the future, good-neighborliness and overall cooperation". During his visit to China last April when talking with Hu Jintao, Chinese President and other state leaders, both parties expressed the hope to raise the good-neighborly friendship and overall cooperation to a new level, thereby making the two countries and the two peoples to be good neighbors, friends, comrades and companions for ever and a day. To this end, efforts are being made by the two parties to solve the problems in the bilateral ties and strengthen economic and trade cooperation.

Lately the Vietnamese government sent its deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to visit China, aiming at actively carrying out the agreements reached by the leaders of both countries. He firmly believes that the friendship between Vietnam and China is sure to be handed down from generation to generation.

When dealing with the field for further cooperation, Nong Duc Manh said that the bilateral cooperation still harbors great potentials, and efforts should be made to achieve a trade volume of 5 billion US dollars by the year 2005. The two countries should also enhance cooperation in the fields of culture, science and technology, as well as multilateral cooperation through such organizations as the ASEAN. The Vietnamese side will strengthen cooperation with China's border regions. The bilateral cooperation should focus not only on quantity but also on quality so as to raise the friendly cooperative ties between the two countries to a new level.

With regard to the role of media, Nong Duc Manh pointed out that under the complicated international situations at present, media is of crucial importance in maintaining and strengthening party leadership. He hopes to further promote the mutual understanding and friendly ties between the two parties and peoples through the communication and cooperation between the Papers, Nhan Dan (The People) and Renmin Ribao (People's Daily).

At last Nong Duc Manh asked People's Daily to send his New Year greetings to President Hu Jintao, and convey his wishes that the Chinese people would make greater achievements in their marching toward the grand goals set by the 16th Party Congress of the CPC.

Since the normalization of the ties between the two parties and the two countries, said Wang Chen, Renmin Ribao and Nhan Dan have been visiting each other annually with friendly ties strengthened continuously. As the official organ paper of the Chinese Communist Party, Renmin Ribao is willing to further its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Vietnamese counterpart, Nhan Dan, exchange information and experience on publicity work with contributions made to carrying forward the traditional friendship between the two sides and creating a new situation of overall friendly cooperative ties in the 21st century.

Present at the meeting were Dinh The Huynh, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan, and Qi Jianguo, Chinese ambassador to Vietnam.

The People's Daily delegation arrived in Hanoi on December 9 for a weeklong friendly visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Nhan Dan.
