China reported 156 serious food poisoning cases involving 4,945 victims and 145 deaths in the third quarter, the Ministry of Health announced Tuesday.

The number of cases increased by 25.8 percent over the previous quarter, and the numbers of victims and deaths were up 9 percent and 74.7 percent respectively.

A ministry official said the reported cases of chemical poisoning totaled 51 with 1,013 victims and 54 deaths. Microbial food poisoning cases totaled 49 with 2,938 victims and 20 deaths, mainly due to inadequate heating of food, inappropriate storage and contaminated containers. Cases involving poisoned animals or plants numbered 36 with 444 victims and 62 deaths.

The official said 78 cases involved homes in which 132 people died, accounting for 91 percent of the total deaths. Another 2,570people received food poisoning in dining halls, accounting for 52 percent of the total.

The official said food poisoning cases in schools surged sharply, with 65 cases involving 3,270 victims, but no deaths. This was mainly due to poor management of food processing.

He said China's State Council issued a set of regulations on public health emergency treatment after the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) hit China this year. As a result, local administrations' awareness and management of reporting cases improved. The Ministry of Health had strengthened the administration and supervision of the reporting system, giving the media a bigger role.
