Galaxy Resort and Casino, one of the newest entrants into Macao's hospitality and gaming industry, unveiled here on Wednesday a 1.1-billion-US dollar plan for building casinos and hotels in Macao.

The five-star Galaxy Star World Hotel, Galaxy's first purpose-built property, is due to open in 2005, said Francis Lui, chairmanof the board of the Galaxy Resort and Casino, adding that the hotel will incorporate art leisure and gaming facilities.

Among other multipurpose leisure and gaming facilities in Galaxy's plan are the renovation of the Galaxy Waldo Hotel and thebuilding of a mega resort hotel on a large piece of plot at the joint of Macao's Coloane and Taipa islands, which are scheduled toopen in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

Lui said that the proposal for building the Galaxy Star World Hotel has been submitted to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government for approval, and Galaxy hopes to launch the operation in 2005.

"When completed, the property will be the second tallest building in Macao and feature over 33 floors of leisure, gaming and hotel facilities," said Lui.

Galaxy Resort and Casino obtained a license for casino operation last March through the government-run public bidding, with the Wynn Resorts and the Macao Gaming Co. Ltd as its major rivals.

On the management of hotels and casinos, Lui said that his company does not want to recreate "a large Las Vegas-type footprint" in Macao.

"We recognize that the needs of Asian customers are quite different from those in the US," said Lui disclosing that his hotels and casinos will create a multicultural experience for their customers in a relaxed, friendly and safe atmosphere.

The new Galaxy hospitality facilities are expected to offer up to 6,000 jobs here for the next seven years.
