President Hu foresees stronger links with Spain

Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday in Beijing that China is ready to join efforts with Spain to push bilateral relations to a new level in the new century.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday in Beijing that China is ready to join efforts with Spain to push bilateral relations to a new level in the new century.

Hu made the remarks during a meeting with Ana Palacio, Spanish foreign minister, Juan Antonio Samaranch, former chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and other Spanish officials attending the Sino-Spanish forum held in Beijing.

Hu said the forum has built a new bridge of friendly exchanges between the peoples of the two countries. He said the forum is of great significance for deepening mutual understanding and friendship and promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all areas.

He expressed the wish that the results of the forum would help deepen and expand friendship and cooperation between China and Spain.

Hu said Spain is an important member of the European Union. He said Spain plays an increasingly important role in European and international affairs. He expressed appreciation for Spain's efforts to develop relations with China and push forward relations between China and Europe over the years.

Palacio conveyed greetings from the Spanish king and prime minister to President Hu. She said she fully agreed with Hu's comments on bilateral relations, saying the success of the Sino-Spanish forum has shrunk the distance between the two peoples.

Palacio reiterated the Spanish government's adherence to the "one China" policy, saying the Taiwan regime should correct its use of "referendum legislation" to seek independence.

Samaranch said he was glad to be able to continue to work for the Spanish-Chinese friendship as the Spanish Chairman of the Sino-Spanish forum. He expressed the wish that the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games would be a great success and make fresh contributions to the Olympic Movement.
