Strong quake jolts north Japan

An earthquake registering 6.0 on the Richter scale hit eastern Hokkaido, north Japan, on Monday morning,the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

An earthquake registering 6.0 on the Richter scale hit eastern Hokkaido, north Japan, on Monday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake that occurred at 10:31 a.m. (0131 GMT). No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of7 in the town of Kushiro, and 3 in the towns of Niikappu and Betsukai as well as the city of Kushiro.

The focus of the quake was 40 kilometers below sea level off Kushiro, the agency said.
