Kerry wins first caucuses in US Democratic nomination process

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry won Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses Monday night, the first step in his battle to seek the party's nomination.

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry won Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses Monday night, the first step in his battle to seek the party's nomination.

Preliminary results showed that Kerry, a US senator from Massachusetts, received 38 of the votes, followed by Senator John Edwards from North Carolina with 32 percent of the votes, and former Vermont governor Howard Dean with 18 percent of the votes.

Representative Dick Gephardt of Missouri, who won the 1988 caucuses, lagged behind with only 11 percent of the votes.
