Vietnam bans poultry trade, transportation nationwide

The Vietnamese government has imposed a nationwide ban on the transportation, trading and slaughtering of live poultry for sales in an effort to curb the further spread of bird flu, local media reported Thursday.

The decision was made at a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on Wednesday, said the report.

He also asked the leaders of municipal and provincial People's Committees to mobilize all forces, including market control, veterinarian, health, police, military and transport to guarantee the enforcement of bans on trading and transporting poultry, poultry products and poultry feeds.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport asked all transport firms nationwide not to deliver fowl and fowl products.

During the meeting, the premier also asked government officials to go to cities and provinces to inspect the implementation of anti-bird flu measures from Thursday.

Furthermore, he told the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to publicize bird flu situations in Vietnam, and call for more personnel and financial assistance from foreign countries and international organizations.

The US Center for Disease Control and the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance under the United States Agency for International Development pledged to donate 10 sprayers, 300 protective suits, and 300 sets of gloves to Vietnam. The equipment will arrive in Vietnam on Friday or Saturday, according to the American Embassy in Vietnam.

On Wednesday, the Asian Development Bank offered Vietnam 210,000 US dollars, including 50,000 dollars for protective suit purchase and healthcare staff training, and 160,000 dollars mainly for information campaign on raising the public awareness about bird flu.
