Death toll in Indonesia's earthquakes reaches 22

The death toll in the earthquakes in Indonesia's Papua on Feb. 6 morning reached 22 people as of 1:10 p.m. local time (0100 GMT) and the figure could increase as thedamages following the earthquakes also happened in several villages in the city of Nabire.

The death toll in the earthquakes in Indonesia's Papua on Friday morning reached 22 people as of 1:10 p.m. local time (0100 GMT) and the figure could increase as the damages following the earthquakes also happened in several villages in the city of Nabire.

Vice regional police chief Tony Yakubus was quoted by state news agency Antara as saying that among the 22 victims is a police officer.

He said the damage in the communication facilities has made police officers find difficulties in gathering data on the figure of the victims.

The earthquakes in the Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua which measured 6.91 on the Richter scale also damaged an airport tower in Nabire.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 06:05 a.m. local time (2105 GMT Thursday), was estimated in an area about seven km east of Nabire.
