US President George W. Bush was trailing Democratic candidates John Edwards and John Kerry in a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Wednesday.

Both Edwards and Kerry, the two major rivals competing for the party's nomination, held leads at least 10 percentage points in hypothetical match-ups against Bush, according to the poll, which was conducted Monday and Tuesday and had a margin of error of plusor minus 4 percentage points.

In a head-to-head contest, 55 percent of likely voters said they would choose Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, for president over Bush, who got 43 percent of the support, and North Carolina Senator Edwards would defeat the president 54 percent to 44 percent.

Among registered voters, Kerry held a narrow edge over Bush by 51 percent to 46 percent, and Edwards led Bush 49 percent to 48 percent.

Kerry has won 15 of the 17 primaries and caucuses held so far, and Edwards has only one victory, in South Carolina, where he was born.

The poll, which canvassed 1,006 adults, including 568 likely voters, also showed the president's approval rating was down slightly to 51 percent. Forty-six percent said they disapproved Bush's performance as president.

Most of those surveyed considered Bush a strong leader when matched against Kerry, 65 percent to 59 percent, but more said they considered Kerry honest and trustworthy, 61 percent to 55 percent.
