Iraqi killed, US soldier wounded in ambush near Baghdad

One Iraqi was killed and an American soldier was injured Saturday in an ambush by unidentified gunmen near Haswa, 30 km southwest of Baghdad, US military said.

One Iraqi was killed and an American soldier was injured Saturday in an ambush by unidentified gunmen near Haswa, 30 km southwest of Baghdad, US military said.

The attackers opened fire on the American convoy, which consists of three Ford Explorer vehicles, killing one Iraqi interpreter and injuring one American soldier, said an American official.

"We found a dead Iraqi interpreter with a US government ID," said the American official, adding that a 9-mm handgun was found atthe scene.

The attackers were in a moving car, he said.

Witnesses said that one car of the US convoy burst into fire after the attack, one crashed in the middle of the road, while the third safely escaped.

American forces quickly cordoned the area surrounding the scene.
