A dairy cow from Kanagawa Prefecture is highly likely to have been infected with mad cow disease, Kyodo News reported Saturday.
The finding is based on a secondary test at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the health ministry is expected to confirm the result after hearing opinions from experts on Sunday, said the report.
If confirmed, the sick cow will be the country's 10th mad cow case since September, 2001. The last mad cow case was reported in October last year.
The latest suspected mad cow report could fuel concerns about the nation's beef and food industry. Japan has suspended all US beef imports over the outbreaks of the deadly disease. Some leading Japanese fast food restaurants had to stop beef dish supply as they depend heavily on US beef.
The mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE),leads to sponge-like brain and can be transferred to human being if contaminated beef is consumed. But there has been no BSE-linkeddeath report in Japan so far.
