All victims in Jilin fire to be cremated

The bodies of all victims killed in the Feb. 15 fire in northeast China's Jilin Province will be cremated by Feb. 28, as the last family agreed to the procedure on Feb. 22 afternoon.

Forty-six bodies of the 54 dead have been cremated already. Six bodies will be cremated Monday, another one on Wednesday and the last one on Saturday, according to an official with the rescue headquarters.

With the agreement of the family of Wang Zhiguo, who was killed in the fire, to cremate Wang's body, all the families of the killed victims have agreed to the cremation procedure, said the official.

The families will receive an additional 10,000 yuan (1,200 US dollars) to compensation of at least 80,000 yuan (9,670 US dollars) from the local government if they agree to have the victims cremated in five days after Feb. 18, and an additional 5,000 yuan if they agree to have the cremation within 10 days.

The deadly blaze started at 11 a.m. Feb. 15 on the second floor of a department store in Jilin City of the province, where crowds of people were doing weekend shopping. The fire claimed 54 lives and injured 70 more.
