The Spanish Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday it would continue to support the principle of "one China" and rejected the so-called "Taiwan referendum."

The information office of the ministry issued Tuesday night a short communique of four points where it stated that the legislative approval for holding a referendum in China's Taiwan province had been a serious mistake which should have been avoidedand which would affect the region's stability.

The document added that Spain hoped the legislative move would not foster Taiwan's independence and underlined the need to peacefully resolve any dispute that might arise from the issue.
