Shanghai Deputy Mayor Feng Guoqinmet Thursday with Robert Willard, commander of the Seventh Fleet of the US Navy.

The Command Ship "Blue Ridge" of the Seventh Fleet of the US Navy, led by Willard, arrived in Shanghai Tuesday morning on a five-day visit.

Feng welcomed the visit by "Blue Ridge" and briefed Willard on transportation and environmental protection in Shanghai.

Willard said he was deeply impressed by both modern-style skyscrapers and historical relics in Shanghai, one of the most famed cities of the world. He and the US naval delegation enjoyed their stay in Shanghai, Willard said.

Upon their arrival on Tuesday, Willard and the US naval delegation were greeted by Zhao Guojun, commander of the East China Sea Fleet of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) with a welcome ceremony at the port.

Willard held a reception on board "Blue Ridge" Wednesday in return for Zhao's welcome ceremony.

Willard said in a speech that the current visit to Shanghai wasa proof of the closer relations and frequent contacts between the armed forces of the United States and China as well as the two countries.

Willard and the US naval delegation also visited China's home-made guided missile frigate during their stay in Shanghai.

The visit is part of the military exchange plan for the year 2004 between China and the United States. It is the third time "Blue Ridge" ever visited Shanghai.
