China's land and agriculture authorities jointly kicked off a campaign on Friday to look into the status of the country's basic arable lands supposed to be conserved under all conditions, reported the Beijing-based China Daily on Saturday.

A major move by the central government to ensure its "food safety", the investigation is expected to discover just how serious the loss of basic cultivated land is when it comes to construction, conversion to forests and pastures, or agricultural restructuring, officials with the Ministry of Land and Resources were quoted as saying.

The probe's ultimate goal is to gain a clear picture of the current basic lands in preparation for stricter protection measures.

A drop in domestic crop output for three straight years arousedconsiderable concern from the central government at the end of last year, according to the English-language newspaper.
