France to send troops to Haiti
France will send military troops to Haiti to protect French nationals and join the United States troops there to reestablish order in the Caribbean country, a spokeswoman of the French presidency announced Sunday.
France will send military troops to Haiti to protect French nationals and join the United States troops there to reestablish order in the Caribbean country, a spokeswoman of the French presidency announced Sunday.
"France will pursue its efforts with the international community to contribute to the national reconciliation in Haiti," the spokeswoman said, stressing that France is also ready to contribute to a multinational peace force for Haiti.
Earlier on Sunday, Haiti's beleaguered president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who insisted that he should remain until the end of his elected term in 2006, was escorted to the main airport by US Marines at dawn, leaving behind a country in the chaos caused by a three-week rebellion against him.
The Untied States then announced it had deployed Marines to be the "leading element" in an international force to help stabilize Haiti.
The rebels forces are advancing towards the capital of Port-au-Prince after taking over much of the country since their insurgency on Feb. 5.
France took the lead in peace initiatives over the Haitian crisis in past weeks. It repeatedly called for an international peace force and forced Aristide to quit following talks with his representatives on Friday in Paris.
