The Chinese government has launched a six-year campaign to step up development of the agricultural products processing industry to help increase farmers' incomes and promote exports.

Liu Jian, Vice-Minister of Agriculture, said Monday that the campaign would help create 1 million job opportunities a year and increase the per capita income for Chinese farmers by 20 yuan every year.

The ministry's plan involves raising the ratio of farm products processing output value to agricultural output value from 0.6:1 to0.8:1 by 2010. The ratio in developed countries is 3:1.

"Every rise of 0.1 percentage points will bring 2.3 million jobs and increase the per capita income of agricultural industry workers by 193 yuan, "said Liu.

Liu said the ministry would invest more in setting standards for processing, packaging and storage of farm products.

"The campaign will sharpen the competitive edge of China's farm products processing industry, especially in world markets," said Liu.

In the past ten years, the country's farm products processing industry grew by 8.6 percent annually. By 2003, the output value of the sector reached 3.1 trillion yuan.
