What's the meaning of Bush & Blair nominated as candidates for Nobel Peace Prize?

US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were both among the nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize as shown on the list released by the Norwegian Nobel Committee on the cut-off day, Mar. 2. Thousands of protest mails were received by Geir Lundestad, secretary of the committee, in which the addressers denounced the nomination of Bush and Blair, cohort in the war against Iraq, as candidates for the prize, saying that it would be a big mockery of the Nobel Peace Prize if the two finally win.

There have been many political figures winning Nobel Peace Prize, for example, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the winner in 2001; former US President James Earl Carter of 2002. Why, then, Bush and Blair, also state leaders, meet with reproach and censure when they attempt to get the prize? Because they are not the former two and it will be a dissimilation of the meaning of Nobel Peace Prize if they win.

Nobel Peace Prize is established to reward those who have made outstanding contributions to the peace cause of mankind. Carter was awarded because he called for solving international disputes by political means; Annan was awarded because he went everywhere crying for the cause of world peace; Nelson Mandela was awarded because he devoted all his life to the peace cause of South African people. However in recent years, Bush and Blair were nominated consecutively on the grounds that they could brandish their fists to strike east and west, which is not to praise their efforts to pursue peace but encouraging their recklessness in making a show of force.

In 2002 the two were both nominated for Nobel Peace Prize because "they launched the war aimed to overthrow the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and destroyed Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network, reestablishing a new Afghan administration." In 2003 the Norwegian parliament member, who continued his silly wish, nominated Bush and Blair again, but what disappointed him was his nomination had gone beyond the final deadline. This year, he took action earlier and finally pushed the two men into the nomination list. The reason for the nomination is that the two launched the Iraq war, and thus "liberated the Iraqi people from Saddam Hussein, the dictator's long-years rule".

The history of Nobel Peace Prize shows that the committee did not give the award entirely to real peace fighters, but the nomination of the two this time was really two far from normality. Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Corrigan said in a letter to Bush that for the United States and Britain, illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq is not a victory, neither is it capable of liberating the Iraqi people. In fact, the war has incurred more terrifying deaths and destructions and unnecessary suffering to more civilians, especially children. "I think it is a crime committed against peace and human beings." With indignation, she mailed a duplicated copy to Blair.

Nobel prize observers generally held that Bush and Blair would have almost zero chance to win prize. Some people say if the committee chose the two, it would show that the committee completely went mad and the prize would have no confidence from the entire peace-loving world.
