China will make more efforts on pressing population, resources and environmental protection issues that have close links with the people, said Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing Wednesday.

The efforts were part of the concrete implementation of the concept of scientific development, Hu said at a grand seminar on population, resources and environmental protection issues, which was held at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu called on officials at all levels to pursue the concept of people-oriented, comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development, and work hard to resolve the problems that concern people the most. He stressed the importance of achieving balanced and sustainable economic and social development throughout the entire country.

Hu said research work on the country's population strategy is of great importance. Mid and long term population development plans need should be made and innovations in family planning should be introduced.

Strict crop land protection policies should be adopted and implemented, research and assessment of land resources strengthened, and the prevention and control of geographical disasters enhanced, Hu said

The president said environmental monitoring should be reinforced, pollution control be intensified in key river reaches and regions, and environmental and ecological protection in rural areas be given a boost.

Wen Jiabao said China will continue to maintain a low birth rate and new family planning practices should be worked out for migrant families who live away from their homes.

The leaders called on the governments at various levels to enact the strictest arable land protection rules and geological disaster prevention measures.

According to Wen, China will continue its efforts to curb the excessive establishment of development zones and punish those who violate relevant laws.

As for the issue of environmental protection, Wen said the focus will be on the economical use of resources and development of the circular economy, an economy based on the most efficient use of resources and the most effective protection of the environment.

Wen said China should further harness environmental problems in key regions, sea areas, cities, and the Three Gorges reservoir by curbing rising dioxide sulfur, smoke and industrial dust discharge. Efforts for ecological protection are also of great importance.

Other Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan were also presentat the seminar.
