Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will meet on Thursday with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom over the stalled Mideast peace process, the Press Center told Xinhua on Wednesday.
Shalom's visit to Egypt comes days before a proposed meeting between Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and his Israeli counterpart Ariel Sharon.
"President Mubarak succeeded in convincing Qurei and Sharon to meet on March 16," visiting Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters after a meeting with Mubarak earlier in theday.
The Mubarak-Shalom meeting could be seen as part of arrangementsto ensure the success of the first face-to-face encounter between Qurei and Sharon.
According to Egypt's official MENA news agency, Egyptian ForeignMinister Ahmed Maher will hold talks with Shalom on "the latest developments between the Palestinians and Israelis in light of Egypt's efforts to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table and put the roadmap peace plan into effect."
In late December, Maher paid a visit to Israel to help reactivate the roadmap plan that envisions a full Palestinian statehood by 2005.
Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israelin 1979, has been playing a key mediating role in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
However, Egypt recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv in November 2000 in protest of Israel's excessive use of force against unarmed Palestinians.
In April 2002, Egypt also decided to sever all relations with Israel, except diplomatic ties.
