US Senator John Kerry has secured the Democratic presidential nomination by winning a total of 2,194 delegates as of Saturday for the Democratic National Convention scheduled for late July.

There will be 4 ,322 delegates at the convention, and a candidate needs only a simple majority, or at least 2,162, for the nomination.

Also on Saturday, Kerry received 72 percent of the vote in the caucuses in Kansas, adding another victory to his presidential campaign.

Kerry, a four-term senator from Massachusetts, is competing for the nomination with two remaining long shot candidates, Representative Dennis Kucinich from Ohio and the Reverend Al Sharpton from New York.

Seven candidates have bowed out of the contest for the nomination since October last year, with five of them ending their White House bids since the nominating process started in January this year.
